The moon hung in the sky, shedding its eerie light on the lake and the island. It was a dark, cold, quiet night, but the moonlight and the quiet patter of paws sounded. Leopardstar and her small clan quietly made their way to the island, its dark frame shedding a shadow on the land that yawned before the cats.
A brisk wind flowed through the long grass, surprisingly cold and rough. Instead of making the soft whistling, the cold ice-pellits smacked into them, making an uncomfortable slapping sound. But it quickly faded as the cats round a small bend in the path, and the grass turned to water-reeds and cattails as they neared the waters edge.
As Leopardstar gazed into the water's dark depths, she saw nothing. Not even the soothing silver flicks of fish swimming below the surface. Ice was beginning to form over the top of the lake. But a very thin sheet.
The ground was cold and frosty underpaw, and large heaps of snow dotted the ground. And as they neared the fallen log that would lead them to the island, Leopardstar noticed that the log was covered in a mutual layer of frost and ice. "Careful, the log is covered in frost. It will be cold and slippery!" She warned over her shoulder, before placing her left paw on the log.
Leopardstar dug her claws into the slippery bark, risking a glance back to glimpse her clan-mates. The wind blew gently now, but strong enough to whisk the leopard's fur. Before long, Leopardstar was gaining confidence and she was across the log in a heartbeat. When the massive female leopard landed on the sandy shore, she sat and waited for her cats to get across safely. After checking once more to check that everyone was across, she silently made her way onto the main part of the island. The sand grew a bit cold.
Before long, Leopardstar was scrambling up onto the branch that she had claimed as her own. Thanks to the now gone leaves, the bark was dry and not cold. The leopard just sat, claws digging into the bark, as her cats gathered and milled below.
